I have found myself unemployed on more than one occasion, usually because I quit jobs and move across to different states, faster than the average person. While being unemployed can be a challenging time, it can also provide an opportunity to focus on personal and professional development. One way to maximize this time of uncertainty is by practicing effective time management. Here are some tips & tricks to help make the most of your days.
Set a Routine
One of my biggest struggles while being unemployed has been the lack of structure. Creating a daily routine can help you maintain a sense of normalcy and a personal ambiance of productivity. Plan out your days, including time for job searching, networking, personal development, and self-care.
Prioritize what you’re working on
Whether it is job searching or building out your own business make sure this is your top priority. Set aside dedicated time each day to search for openings, customize your resume, work on your business plan, and apply for opportunities. Make sure you’re keeping track of your progress. This helps you look back on everything you’ve been doing, especially on days when you feel stagnant.
Learn New Skills
Listennnnn Linda! Take advantage of your free time to learn new skills that will support the endeavors you are desiring. This can include online courses, certificates, or volunteering. Use your social networks to find people who can mentor or guide you in your aspirations.
Stay active
During this time, your mental and physical health can take a toll if you don’t take care of yourself. It’s important to stay active in any way that you can. If you are able-bodied make sure to incorporate exercise into your routine. If you have difficulty staying physically active due to a disability talk to a healthcare provider about activities you may engage in in order to stay active. Physical activity not only helps manage stress, but it can also boost your confidence and energy levels.
Network
Who you know goes a lot further than what you know, especially when job searching or building a business. Networking is critical in today’s market. Attend networking events, connect with people on LinkedIn, reach out to professional contacts, and set up informational interviews. Ask folks for advice on your job search, Ask people you know about what they believe your best skills are and what kind of jobs you should look into. When connecting with folks, don’t forget to send follow-up emails and thank-you notes.
Take breaks
Unemployment can be a stressful and emotionally draining experience, even when it’s a season you chose personally. Make sure to take breaks and give yourself time to recharge. Take a walk, read a book, catch up with loved ones, watch a movie, and enjoy your usual hobbies. Take time to relax and destress.
Being unemployed doesn’t have to be a negative experience. By practicing effective time management that works best for you, you can use this time to focus on personal and professional development. With persistence, dedication, and gratitude, you can make the most of this time and find your next career opportunity.
